FLUX is pleased to present an exhibition of ceramic work by Roger Herman. Herman, a celebrated artist who is most known for his expressionist painting and large scale woodcuts, began working with clay in 1997. Having for a longtime entertained the idea of painting on the ceramic form he learned to create his own vessels, with an interest directed toward the Eastern wabi-sabi aesthetic. The 3-dimensionality of the forms gives him freedom to explore the figure as he moves around the curved surfaces. Herman works quickly, with no logical technique, utilizing glaze washes, engobes, inlay and resist, which create an energy and physicality in the work that he describes as “alchemical chaos”. Graphic and exhibitionistic, an orgy of bodies, animals, skulls, and more bodies tangle and twist their way around the surface. The figurative work is not highly technical, but more like adolescent pornographic drawings, which surprisingly results in an overall effect that is both sophisticated and understated. Roger Herman’s pots have been shown in galleries in Europe, Japan, and the United States. His most recent exhibition of ceramic work was at the Santa Monica Museum of Art in 2005. Flux is proud to present new work along with a selection of earlier pots in a solo exhibition opening June 3 and running through July 2, 2006. |
